Strongest Rise In Perm Vacancies Since March 2010

The latest KPPG/REC report on jobs has highlighted a number of very interesting changes in the labour market. We are continuing to see very strong growth in the number of permanent vacancies within the Clinical sector with the demand for clinical and nursing staff increasing dramatically. The clinical/nursing sector has seen strong growth in the level of permanent vacancies with most of this growth being in the private sector. The growth in the number of permanent vacancies across the UK is the 2nd strongest since information was first collated in 1997, and interestingly most growth has been in the North of the UK with London and the South East being weakest.

There has also been increased demand for temporary staff in the Clinical/nursing fields which has been higher than the demand on the permanent side. This is in contrast to most other sectors of the UK economy but perhaps reflects the greater amount of project work in this area particularly on the private side.

The knock on effect of this growth in demand is starting to have an effect both in terms of candidate availability, which is diminishing, and salary inflation, as we are starting to see some pressure on salaries and hourly rates, and we expect this to continue over the next few months. However it is worth noting that the level of salary/rate increase is still below the national inflation rate.

Overall this is very positive news for our sectors and we are starting to see a broader range of roles, with much of the growth in the permanent sector.

Amgen & Watson Pharmaceuticals Develop Biosimilars

As reported by The Pharma Letter, the biotechnology company Amgen have teamed up with the US generic drug maker Watson Pharmaceuticals in order to develop and commercialise oncology antibody biosimilar medicines.

Amgen will be responsible for the development, manufacturing and commercialising the oncology antibody products, whilst Watson will contribute $400m across the course of project. Watson will also provide their expertise in marketing the products in more competitive and generic markets. They will also be instrumental in managing the lifecycle of the biosimilar products.

Speaking of the announcement, Robert Bradway, president and CEO at Amgen stated,  “The pairing of Amgen’s 30 years of experience in biologics together with Watson’s substantial generics and specialty pharmaceutical experience and complementary commercial and distribution capabilities provides great potential for worldwide patient access to high quality oncology biosimilar medicines.”

This type of activity seems to be becoming more and more common. In fact, earlier this month Biogen collaborated with Samsung and established a join venture to do just this. In addition, many other large pharmaceutical companies are planning to embark on this, including Merck & Co, Novartis and Pfizer.

Novartis to Cut 20% of U.S Headquarters Jobs

Pharmaceutical Jobs, Pharmaceutical Recruitment, UK, CK ClinicalThe Swiss pharmaceutical industry giant is planning to cut 20% of its US Headquarters staff.  The move comes as the company attempt to cut costs and revamp the way it sells its pharmaceutical products the US markets.

According to reports, there will be 383 pharmaceutical job cuts. Mr Jimenez, CEO of Novartis said the company also plans to restructure its US staff into four new business units, each focused on a specific therapy area: primary care, multiple sclerosis, respiratory disease and neuroscience.

The pharmaceutical company has also seen cuts in it’s sales and marketing spend but they don’t see a reduction in R&D spending. Novartis currently spends about 20% of net sales on R&D. Mr Jiminez stated, “My commitment is to continue to invest heavily in R&D at a time when many of our peers are outsourcing their R&D and reducing their spending because they aren’t seeing the productivity. I just believe this is a business that is fundamentally about R&D and that it should be strategically owned by Novartis and directed by Novartis,” he said.

Pharmaceutical Industry Most Affected by Flight Ban

Pharmaceutical Industry Feeling the Pressure After Flight BanHas the pharmaceutical industry been the worst affected by the country-wide imposed flight ban?

Yes- according to Howard Archer, an Analyst at IHS Global Insight. Archer stated that the pharmaceutical industry has been the worst affected as ‘many of its products moved around by air and needing to be delivered quickly.’

Not only this, but the pharmaceutical industry is notoriously heavily reliant on importing raw materials needed to manufacture their drugs. Understandably, any setback in the supply of these materials can lead to delays in production.

Pharmaceutical products such as vaccines, which have a short shelf life, could prove useless when they eventually reach customers.

However, it seems the big name pharmaceutical companies have remained relatively unaffected, with share prices recovering since the disruption began last Thursday. GlaxoSmithKline’s shares rose 0.35% to 1,283.5p, while AstraZeneca rose 0.7% or 21p to 2,964p.
