CRA Vacancy Market – 17th March 2014

Clinical Research Associate jobs market remains consistently good.  We are now the sixth week of tracking the CRA jobs market and CK Clinical are pleased to say that the market is remaining consistently strong.  Over time, we aim to give you a picture of how this CRA vacancy market changes and evolves and most importantly how this may impact on you.  So whether you are a CRA looking for a new role or an employer seeking new CRAs to join your team, keeping up to date with industry news that impacts you is essential.

Our tracking is based on each week screening some of the UKs leading vacancy boards for how many CRA jobs have been advertised within the last 7 days.  Please bear in mind that there is likely to be some repetition across jobs boards and some duplicate posting but our goal is to build up a picture of trends over time.

So, this weeks summary was completed today (Monday March 17th) and relates to CRA vacancies posted on

  • New Scientist
  • Monster
  • CV library
  • Emedcareers
  • Pharmiweb
  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 638 CRA jobs were published last week (up slightly on last weeks 614) with

  • 550 roles being permanent
  • 88 as contract

This has continued the trend we have seen for permanent CRAs remaining as much more in demand than for contract / interim CRAs  however this is nearly twice as many contract roles as last week.  We will continue to track this and try to identify if this is a trend that continues.  It is very encouraging to see a marked increase in contract opportunities this week.

Boehringers new lung drug promises success for COPD

Pharmatimes has reported that Boehringer Ingelheim’s new lung drug tiotropium in the Phase III data trial significantly reduced exacerbations and improved both lung function and quality of life.

The results of the trial showed that the drug could cut the risk of severe asthma exacerbation by 21% in patients who remain symptomatic despite receiving treatment for the disease.

Sttudy author Professor Huib Kerstjens of the University Medical Centre, Groningen said “While we were anticipating improvements in lung function when adding tiotropium to usual care, the significant reduction in the risk of exacerbations came as a surprise – especially given that all patients were already receiving optimal maintenance treatment as defined by the GINA guidelines”

Ironwood’s drug for IBS sufferers gets FDA approval

Fierce Pharma have reported that Ironwood Pharmaceuticals Inc.  and Forest Laboratories Inc.  won regulatory approval of their Linaclotide treatment for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.

Linaclotide has shown in studies to help alleviate abdominal pain and symptoms of constipation. Ironwood has said that as many as 11 million Americans have irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, and for many it comes with a lot of pain. While Takeda Pharmaceutical is already in the market with its Amitiza, analysts say the fact

that the Ironwood drug may relieve pain will help it quickly outsell its competition.

Linaclotide was developed by Ironwood with New York-based Forest Labs, and the companies will co-promote the drug in the U.S. Ironwood licensed the drug in Europe to Barcelona, Spain- based Almirall SA (ALM), and to Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc. (4503) for several Asian countries.
