Alzheimer’s drug enters major clinical trial

As reported on A commonly prescribed diabetes drug may reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer’s so has now entered into a major clinical trial.

The initial research, which was funded by the Alzheimer’s Society, claims the drug liraglutide may be able to reverse some of the damage caused in the later stages of the disease, such as memory loss and the build up of plaques on the brain.

Liraglutide is currently used by diabetes sufferers to help  stimulate insulin, but research has shown it also has the ability to pass through the blood brain barrier and have a protective effect on brain cells.

The Alzheimer Society’s Drug Discovery programme repurposes existing drugs for use in dementia treatment. Early research showed the potential in early stage Alzheimer’s leading to a major clinical trial, led by the Imperial College of London. With the recruitment of patients beginning in the next few weeks and if successful liraglutide will be the first new dementia treatment in ten years!

NIHR Providing £124m for Research

The National Institute for Health Research has put aside £124 million for research projects.

The money will be made available over 5 years by the NIHR and applied to a number of different healthcare areas. The projects that are to benefit “could potentially help the development of ground breaking treatments,” as stated by Lord Howe, the UK Health Minister.

The UK’s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, has said that the projects “will link the NHS, universities, and other relevant organisations providing care for patients.”  Reduction in the risk of dementia and improvement in nutrition and exercise of those already diagnosed are just two areas in which the research will be focussed.

GSK Reaffirms Vaccination Commitments

GSK has reaffirmed its commitment to the GAVI Alliance by providing vaccinations to children in developing countries.

240 million doses of Synflorix will be provided by GSK at a small fraction of the price the drug is usually sold for in developed countries. The doses will be given over the next ten years and are set to benefit 80 million children by protecting them from pneumococcal diseases such as meningitis and pneumonia.

GSK had already provided 480 million doses of Synflorix at a heavily discounted price to a number of the poorest countries in the world. The pharmaceutical company also provides the GAVI Alliance with many other drugs, including ones capable of protecting against the rotavirus, cervical cancer, hepatitis B and diphtheria, amongst others. Over 300 million children are to be expected to be protected by 2024 thanks to GSK’s commitment.
