Sunil, I agree entirely. MAMs can often help shape the promotional claims as they are very aware of how the disease areas and treatments are developing. Influencing positively is always a more successful strategy than policing marketing/sales. MAMs are not the sales prevention department which sometimes was the perception. Hopefully we've all moved on from those days.
Great comment - glad we had space here to bring out this important aspect of a MAM role.

Hi Sharon,

thank you for the overview of the role of a MAM / Medical Advisor. One observation from your article is that as a marketer I also look to a MAM to challenge our brand communication strategy. As you say you have a great understanding of the product data and market and so a MAM is in a good position to other suggestions on how we communcate the brand benefits to te market place. I must admit too often I see a MAM will view their role as approving promotional materials, but I expect the MAM to be part of its developing by working side by side with the brand team.

A good MAM in my mind should be more than just 'policing' promtional materials :-))

What are your on thoughts on this?

Drug Safety is indeed a very intriguing and highly sensitive area for any pharmaceutical company. Hence, it is very important that only people who actually like this area should be put to this work. I work as a drug/patient safety resource for a leading pharma company and enjoy doing my job. The sense of responsibility gives the boost to remain on tows and enjoy doing your work.

Witty is trying to makeup for sins of the past. Wellcome was decimated by Glaxo. Research in Tropical Medicine, especially malaria, was Henry Wellcome's legacy. If Wellcome had survived, this initiative would likely be much further along. It would have been nice if some of the outstanding scientists at Wellcome who lost there jobs had had the opportunity to work at the lab that is now being created.
