Tackling Bullying at Work

Bullying in the workplace can take many forms, including:

  • Intimidation or harassment: Intimidating or harassing an employee.
  • Isolation: Isolating an employee by ignoring him or her.
  • Constant criticism: Constantly criticizing an employee, often in front of their colleagues.
  • Unrealistic expectations/workload: Expecting an employee to produce unrealistic amounts of work.
  • Passing blame: Blaming an employee for the employers mistakes.
  • Physical abuse.

So how can you tackle bullying in the workplace?

  • Get advice: Talk to your colleagues/supervisor at work. They might be able to offer you some helpful advice and support to help you move forward.
  • Keep a diary: Keep a note of all the behavior which you think could constitute bullying – this could provide valuable evidence in the future.
  • Talk to the bully: The bully may not realize how their behavior is affecting you.
  • Make a formal complaint: If you can’t solve the problem informally, this is the next step. To do this you must follow your companies grievance procedure.
