Tackling Bullying at Work
Bullying in the workplace can take many forms, including:
- Intimidation or harassment: Intimidating or harassing an employee.
- Isolation: Isolating an employee by ignoring him or her.
- Constant criticism: Constantly criticizing an employee, often in front of their colleagues.
- Unrealistic expectations/workload: Expecting an employee to produce unrealistic amounts of work.
- Passing blame: Blaming an employee for the employers mistakes.
- Physical abuse.
So how can you tackle bullying in the workplace?
- Get advice: Talk to your colleagues/supervisor at work. They might be able to offer you some helpful advice and support to help you move forward.
- Keep a diary: Keep a note of all the behavior which you think could constitute bullying – this could provide valuable evidence in the future.
- Talk to the bully: The bully may not realize how their behavior is affecting you.
- Make a formal complaint: If you can’t solve the problem informally, this is the next step. To do this you must follow your companies grievance procedure.
